Accidental Injury
Accidental injury is an injury resulting from external, accidental means.
Actively Working
A person is actively working when he/she is carrying out the normal duties of his/her job on a scheduled work day, on a scheduled day off or while on vacation.
Benefits
Benefits refer to any care or service that is specifically listed under the benefit package subject to the terms and provisions of the Policy.
Child
A child refers to an unmarried biological son or daughter, an adopted child, a stepchild or a common-law child. A common-law child is the child of your common law spouse and another person.
Co-insurance
Co-Insurance is the percentage of Eligible Expenses which is payable by the life insurance company providing the benefit.
Consecutive Months
Consecutive months are the applicable periods of 12, 24, 36, 48 or 60 months, commencing on the date the first eligible expense is incurred.
Convalescent Hospitals
A convalescent hospital is an extended-care hospital facility or institution which is licensed by the appropriate authority in its' jurisdictions, which is regularly engaged in the care of patients who do not require active medical treatments but who do require skilled nursing care and continued medical supervision for the acute phase of their illness. The term does not include a federal hospital, a nursing home, a home for the aged, a private rest home, a chronic care facility, a health spa or hotel, a facility providing custodial care or an institution for the treatment of alcohol and drug addiction or mental illness.
Death Benefits
Death benefits are the monetary amount paid to a beneficiary upon the death of the insured.
Deductible
A deductible is the amount of Eligible Expenses that must be incurred and paid by the insured or the insureds' dependents before benefits are payable by the insurance company covering the benefit.
Dentist
A Dentist is a practitioner of dentistry, qualified and licensed to practice in the jurisdiction in which the service or supplies are being offered.
Dependent
A dependent is your legal spouse, or person of the opposite gender whom you have been residing with in a husband and wife relationship; your unmarried natural children, adopted children, or stepchildren living in your home, who are under 21 years of age or under 24 if they are in full-time attendance at school.
Dependent Life Insurance
Dependant life insurance covers the dependents of the primary insured.
Disability
A disablity is the incapacity to work as the result of an injury or sickness.
Earnings
Earnings are your gross salary before any deductions, including the deduction of Income Tax, but not including such things as bonuses, dividends, overtime or profit sharing. Annual earnings are your earnings for the entire year; monthly earnings are annual earnings divided by 12. If your income includes commissions, your earnings are the average earnings over the past two years according to your T-4 slips. If you have been an employee for less than two years, your earnings will be estimated by your employer. Any changes to your benefit resulting from a change in commission income will take affect April 1st. This provides your employer enough time to report the change to the insuring agent after the T-4 slips have been issued.
Eligible Expenses
Eligible expenses are expenses that will be considered in the calculation of payment due under your Extended Health Care or Dental Care Benefits.
Elimination Period
Elimination period is a period of ongoing and total disability that the insured must experience in order to qualify for disability benefits.
Emergency
An emergency is any sudden, unexpected illness or injury happening outside of your home province, or outside of Canada, for which you need immediate medical treatment.
Illness
An illness is a sickness or disease of the mind or body.
Immediate Family Member
Immediate family members are your spouse, child, your parents or spouse's parents, your siblings, or your spouse's siblings.
Leave of Absence
A leave of absence is a period of time as defined by the benefits package offered by the insurance company.
Long-term Disability
Long-term disability is the incapacity to work because of an illness or injury lasting for an extended period of time as defined by the benefits package offered by the insurance company.
Paternity Leave
Is the period of time that a new father is allowed to be absent from his job in order to care for his child.
Physician
A physician is a doctor of medicine who is duly licensed to prescribe and administer medical treatment and medications and to perform surgery within the scope of his/her license.
Policy
A Policy is the agreement between your employer and the insuring agent. It is a legal document that gives full details about your group coverage.
Pregnancy
Pregnancy means carrying a child within the womb.
