he flagship Ethical Growth Fund® was launched in 1986. At that time, it was the only socially responsible mutual fund available in Canada. Despite skepticism in the mainstream financial community, the Ethical Growth Fund proved popular with credit union members. Available only to a local market, the Fund attracted $10 million in its first year, far surpassing the $3 million target. The Fund soon went national (except Quebec) and assets climbed quickly. Faced with deregulation of the financial services industry in the early 1990s, credit unions needed more financial products to compete with bank products. Credit Union Central of Canada responded by forming The Ethical Funds Company Inc. in 1992. Along with the Ethical Growth Fund, Credit Union Central of Canada purchased four more small investment funds owned by individual credit unions, expanding the product line to five socially responsible Funds. Fourteen Funds have since been added to the family. In January 2000, the Desjardins network, Quebec's largest financial institution, began to offer The Ethical Funds Company to its five million members. The expansion of distribution in Quebec resulted from an historic alliance between Credit Union Central of Canada and the Mouvement des caisses Desjardins. The family of The Ethical Funds Company is also distributed through qualified investment professionals, discount brokers, life insurers and other institutional partners. The Ethical Funds Company is proud to be part of the cooperative movement, and its tradition of service and commitment to communities. Profits from the sale of The Ethical Funds Company flow back to the credit unions in the communities where they are sold.
