Insurance Glossary E- Earnings
Earnings are your gross salary before any deductions, including the deduction of Income Tax, but not including such things as bonuses, dividends, overtime or profit sharing. Annual earnings are your earnings for the entire year; monthly earnings are annual earnings divided by 12. If your income includes commissions, your earnings are the average earnings over the past two years according to your T-4 slips. If you have been an employee for less than two years, your earnings will be estimated by your employer. Any changes to your benefit resulting from a change in commission income will take affect April 1st. This provides your employer enough time to report the change to the insuring agent after the T-4 slips have been issued.
- Eligible Expenses
Eligible expenses are expenses that will be considered in the calculation of payment due under your Extended Health Care or Dental Care Benefits. - Elimination Period
Elimination period is a period of ongoing and total disability that the insured must experience in order to qualify for disability benefits. - Emergency
An emergency is any sudden, unexpected illness or injury happening outside of your home province, or outside of Canada, for which you need immediate medical treatment.
