Insurance Glossary - Pregnancy Leave of Absence (Maternity Leave)
Maternity leave is the period of time a woman is allowed to be absent from her job because of her pregnancy. It can either be a pregnancy leave allowed by provincial or federal law or a leave that she and her employer have agreed to. It can also mean a pregnancy leave allowed by law that the employer requires her to take. - Proof of Insurability
Proof of insurability is the additional information that the insuring agent requires regarding the client's health, job, and leisure activities to decide what coverage to provide. - Short-Term Disability
Short-term disability is insurance that provides benefits, often as a portion of salary, during a period of short-term disability as defined by the insurance company offering the benefits package. Also referred to as weekly indemnity. - Spouse
A spouse is the individual term for either a man or woman who are legally married or have been living with in a common-law arrangement. Common-law spouses are opposite gender partners who have openly resided together for at least 12 months. - Survivorship Clause
Survivorship is a stipulation requiring that the beneficiary survive the owner of the benefits package a set amount of time in order to receive the benefits. - Waiting Period for Coverage
Waiting period for coverage is the amount of time the insured must wait while being actively at work before qualifying for coverage. - Waiting Period for Disability Payments
The long-term disability waiting period is the amount of time the insured must wait after becoming disabled before being eligible for long-term disability payments. - Weekly Indemnity
